Biofilters

Biological water filters (biofilters) are used for nitrification and denitrification in aquaculture.

Nitrification filters can have a static or floating loading filter. They can be used both as a biofilter for a processing plant (UGV) and for wastewater treatment.

In biofilters, the bacterial culture settles in an artificial environment, the so-called filter filler. The biofilter carrier we use has a specific surface area of 750 m2 / m3 and due to its special structure it can be highly self-cleaning

Floating Loading Biofilter

In biofilters with floating loading, the bacterial culture carrier of the biofilten filler is in constant motion due to the supplied atmospheric air, therefore the material is constantly cleaned independently. The bacterial culture is evenly and stably supplied with oxygen.

Biofilters with floating loading can be made both rectangular and round. As a rule, filters up to 10 m3 are made round. Larger filters are mostly made of concrete and have a rectangular cross-section.

Plastic round filters are supplied pre-installed, ready for installation and connection. For rectangular filters, we supply all the necessary components such as aerators, sieves, biofilter filler and blowers, which are then installed in a prefabricated biofilter housing.

Biofilters can also be integrated into existing aquaculture facilities. With limited water resources or stringent emission requirements, such filters are an effective tool to maintain or even increase the efficiency of aquaculture while reducing water use.

Benefits of biofilters:

  • Optimal distribution of water flows
  • Energy efficiency thanks to the design of aerators and matching blowers
  • Comparatively short time frames for launching filters
  • High degree of decomposition of ammonium-nitrogen compounds
  • Static loading biofilters

Static loading biofilters are also applicable to nitrification such as floating loading biofilters. They are typically used in cold water aquaculture systems. In addition to the biodegradation of ammonium nitrogen, such filters perform another function of mechanical filtration of water. Thanks to the statically charged structure of the filter media, it removes fine particles from the water.

Unlike floating-load biofilters, static-load biofilters must be flushed regularly. Small static load filters are supplied to us in the form of a round container, ready for connection. Oversized filters are made from concrete on site. We supply the necessary equipment for them.
